Our IWA bird logo symbolizes guidance and pathway. Ancient Hawaiians used the iwa's flight patterns to predict the weather. For example, a group of iwa flying in a wide circle was a sign of an approaching storm. The saying "Lele ka 'iwa, malie kai ko'o" means "When the iwa flies out towards the sea, the sea will be calm".
In Hawaiian mythology, the iwa is connected to the goddess Kaiona, who would send the birds to guide those lost in the Ka'ala and Wai'anae mountains. Because of this, the iwa symbolizes guidance and pathway. Although 'iwa (great frigatebird) captures most of its own prey, this behavior inspired both its Hawaiian and English names: 'iwa means “thief”, as well as the nickname “man-of-war bird." and “frigate” which refers to the fast ships used by pirates.
